Email Signature Influence on Attention: 2026 Report

What eye-tracking heat maps reveal about attention, trust, and brand impact deriving from email signatures.

Executive Summary

Attention is scarce. Trust is fragile. And one of the most consistent communication channels in business is being overlooked.

Email remains the backbone of professional communication, and recipients scan these messages quickly, looking for cues that signal whether a message is legitimate, professional, and worth their time.

This study set out to examine where attention actually goes when people read everyday emails. The answer was consistent across every experiment: email signatures aren’t passive footers. They are repeatedly the first and last elements seen, acting as instant recognition cues that increase reader confidence and engagement with the message itself.

Branded, standardized signatures outperformed unstructured or absent signatures by a wide margin. In a channel where attention is brief and trust matters most, email signatures are strategic brand real estate, appearing at the exact moment decisions are formed.

About The Study

We examined how people visually engage with email signatures during everyday email reading, including:
  • Where the reader’s attention naturally goes
  • Which elements of the email are noticed most
  • What readers see last before closing an email
  • How design choices influence trust and memory recall

This study focuses on realistic, day-to-day emails, not promotional blasts or marketing newsletters.

What We Measured

  • Fixation time: how long participants looked at an element
  • Last area of interest (AOI) viewed: what element they looked at last
  • Time to first fixation: how long it took for participants to look at an element
  • Pupil dilation: how intensely the eyes focus on an element

Participants

Participants included CMOs of WiseStamp customers and partners, as well as tech experts, from leading tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, Monday, Elementor, Lightico, Airwallex, Foretellix, Rapaport, Cellebrite, Axonius, D-ID, and many more. Branded vs Unbranded Emails

Consider two organizations communicating with prospects, customers, and partners through everyday email. Company A relies on minimal, self-managed sign-offs. Employees close emails with basic text footers containing a name, job title, and company name. In many cases, even this information is inconsistent or incomplete.

Company B, by contrast, equips every employee with a standardized, branded email signature. Each signature follows company guidelines and includes clear identification, job title, contact details, and brand elements such as a company logo, headshot and website link.

When participants in this study were randomly shown identical emails differing only in the presence of an email signature, emails sent by Company B held attention 50% longer. The message itself did not change.

The credibility and clarity surrounding it did. This demonstrates that email signatures significantly increase engagement in real-world, one-to-one communication, without adding friction, noise, or additional content.

In our study, participants spent 15% more time viewing emails with a headshot in the email signature than those with a logo. However, the email signature is 26% more likely to be the final area viewed in the email when there is a logo present, rather than a headshot.

Together, these findings point to a clear pattern: headshots are more effective for initiating attention and guiding readers back into the email content, while logos are more effective for closing brand recall at the end of the email.

Eye-tracking patterns revealed a consistent sequence (see diagram): participants first scanned the sender’s name (1), then the image in the signature (2), then the contact details (3), and only afterward continued reading the email body (4). This pattern indicates that human imagery draws attention early and encourages deeper engagement with the message itself.

Employee A sends emails with a static email signature containing only standard contact details. Employee B sends emails with a branded email signature that includes a visual banner aligned with the company’s latest campaign.

When participants were shown identical emails, differing only in the presence of a banner in the signature, recipients spent 18% more total time viewing emails sent by Employee B.

This effect was observed across both the email body and the signature area, indicating that banners do not distract from the message. Instead, they increase overall engagement with the communication, and act as a strong closing touchpoint for brand reinforcement and messaging recall.

For organizations, this highlights the role of email signatures as a natural extension of active marketing efforts. Whether promoting a webinar, announcing an event, or reinforcing a key initiative, banners allow teams to align everyday emails with current campaigns across departments, regions, and roles, without adding new sends or channels.
